Serviceberry tree ripening on East Lake Dr. in Oakhurst

Okay yall, let’s get down to business. We are going to go on several small picks this week — no more than an hour apiece — and then we’ll have 2 normal sized picks this weekend, the first at Freedom Park on Saturday morning, and the second on Sunday at an undisclosed/we-haven’t-figured-it-out-yet location. What else could you possibly be doing this weekend? Come on out!

If you haven’t had serviceberries, they’re not too far from a blueberry and they grow all of the place, thanks to our dear friends at Trees Atlanta.

Our record for most serviceberries donated is about 80 lbs., set in 2011. Help us beat it this year! Sign up for one or many picks in the sidebar on the right.

Busy weekend!

The farm keeps coming right along folks…we’re up to 40 lbs donated from Dog Head Farms so far (starting from a kudzu covered field 3 months ago), and at about 30 lbs. of mulberries and serviceberries donated so far (despite the weird winter/fruit season, and at what would normally be the second week of the picking season).

We also rescued several fruit trees from the Kipp Strive Academy in West Atlanta before they start a big renovation project. We got:

  • 8 serviceberries
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 3 plums
  • 1 pawpaw

We planted 4 serviceberries and a plum at the farm, and sent the rest off to good homes.

We also got our first honey from the Dog Head Farms beehive — close to 10 lbs! We’ll also be getting a lot more soon…there were many frames of not quite capped honey.

And finally, Fred Conrad of the Atlanta Community Food Bank was kind enough to come out and plow at the farm, and we really need y’alls help with making beds this weekend. Come on out on Saturday!

This week’s adventure: fruit tree rescue at Kipp Strive Academy

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

So in the 3ish years we’ve been running Concrete Jungle, we’ve picked serviceberries either May 17th or May 23rd. That would lead one to believe that May 20th, 2012, would be a solid time for also picking serviceberries, right? Well, I guess the other lesson to be gleaned from running Concrete Jungle for these years is that every single year has been completely different for fruit schedules. So serviceberries are all gone. As is just about everything else. My bad.

Coincidentally, it turns out the Lucile Ave, the street in southwest Atlanta lined with 40 serviceberry trees, is getting a bus lane put in at Kipp Strive Academy, and several of the best producing trees are going to be bulldozed over unless someone (us) comes and digs them up and replants them. Sounds great right? We’re going to get out there at 10am on Sunday and plop out some trees, and you should join us.

That’s our fruit tree adventure this week. The normal June lull in fruits around Atlanta is setting in early, so please forgive the lack of pickings this week. We’ll do our best to keep on top of it and get bellies full of berries soon again.

We should be able to take care of all the tools necessary, so just bring some sunscreen, a good hat, and maybe a musical instrument. See yall out there!

Pick rescheduled for Tuesday at 6pm

Sorry folks….otherwise we’ll just be standing in the rain all day.
