Our first orchard!

Monday, March 4th, 2013

To all of you that didn’t come out and help plant trees with us on Sunday: it was probably very nice inside your warm homes away from the snow outside. But still, shame on you.

We probably could not have picked a worse day for planting a bunch of trees, but c’est la vie. There were about 9 of us altogether, and we got 15 trees in the ground in 3 different locations in about 2 hours. Not bad! They will soon appear on the food map, but we had 2 persimmons, 2 figs, 3 pears, 6 apples, and 2 plums go in.

We cannot thank our volunteers enough for doing manual labor on the coldest day in a long time, and we owe much gratitude to those of you whose donations made these mini orchards possible in the first place. Thank you all so much!

We may have also recently received a small cache of fruit trees unexpectedly donated to us, so we will hopefully have some more orchard projects in the near future. Stay tuned!

Busy weekend!

Monday, May 21st, 2012
The farm keeps coming right along folks…we’re up to 40 lbs donated from Dog Head Farms so far (starting from a kudzu covered field 3 months ago), and at about 30 lbs. of mulberries and serviceberries donated so far (despite the weird winter/fruit season, and at what would normally be the second week of the picking season).

We also rescued several fruit trees from the Kipp Strive Academy in West Atlanta before they start a big renovation project. We got:

  • 8 serviceberries
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 3 plums
  • 1 pawpaw

We planted 4 serviceberries and a plum at the farm, and sent the rest off to good homes.

We also got our first honey from the Dog Head Farms beehive — close to 10 lbs! We’ll also be getting a lot more soon…there were many frames of not quite capped honey.

And finally, Fred Conrad of the Atlanta Community Food Bank was kind enough to come out and plow at the farm, and we really need y’alls help with making beds this weekend. Come on out on Saturday!

Critical Fruit Mass, Sunday July 3rd

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Hey folks – we’re putting together a meandering bike ride this Sunday (Facebook invite) to help folks identify all the tasty goodness growing in Atlanta. We will be leaving from Park Grounds coffeeshop in Reynoldstown at 10 am this Sunday, and wandering all through Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown and Grant Park. The ride will end at the Grant Park Farmer’s Market Peach Jam, hopefully just in time for the peach cobbler contest at noon. See you there!

Out of a lull

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Traditionally, June is a bit of a quiet month…mulberries and serviceberries are pretty much gone, and lots of other things are still fattening up. While things have definitely been quiet around here, we’ve discovered a lot of exciting things on the horizon.

The first is that, by all accounts, this is going to be an absolute bumper crop of a year for fruit. Every fruit tree I can think of is well laden. We’re going to be working hard. We’ve added over 30 new points to the food map since the end of last year and the ability to filter out specific fruits on the map, so hopefully you can find something tasty for yourself.

The second is that for as long as we’ve been picking fruit in this city, we keep discovering new things, like plums, nectarines, blueberries, and cherries. We’ve got a small pick scheduled for this Sunday, 4th of July to try to get some of these in-betweeners. Nothing too time-consuming, and we’ve all probably got plans later on in the day anyways.
